Even it has the world’s eighth-largest immigrant population, with immigrants accounting for 29% of the population.

Under Skillselect program for skilled worker, applicants can gain permanent visa by meeting Australian immigration requirements which are based on qualifications, work experience and language ability.

This program is a point based program which means one has to meet the minimum point criteria which is 65 points. Moreover, under this program there are 3 visa subclasses, an applicant can apply under any one of the subclass which is more relevant to him and his skills. The basic requirements and point criteria is almost same in all the subclasses.

Basic Requirements

  • Age: Must be less than 50 years.
  • Language: An applicant must have competent level of English and must have undertakes IELTS.
  • Nominated occupation: Must have skills and qualifications related to the nominated occupation.
  • The nominated occupation must be found on the Skilled Occupations List.
  • Skills Assessment: Must have skills and qualifications assessed by the Australian assessing authority designated to assess nominated occupation.
  • Health Assessment: Must undertake health assessment to prove fitness.
  • Character Assessment: Applicant has to prove that he is of good moral character and hence has to get criminal record checked.

SubClasses

  • Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189): An applicant independently applies for this visa without any sponsorship from the state or territory of Australia. This visa allows an applicant a permanent visa which allows him to stay in Australia along with family members.
  • Skilled Nomination (Subclass 190): An applicant needs to have sponsorship from the state or territory of Australia. Under this visa, one is expected to live for at least 2 years inside the State/Territory that nominated for subclass 190.
  • Skilled Regional Provisional (Subclass 489): An applicant needs to be nominated by a state or territory to live in a Regional or Low Population Growth Area, or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area in Australia. After 2 years of living and 12 months of working in a Regional or low Population Growth Area on this visa, the applicant can apply for the Skilled Regional Subclass 887 visa, which grants legal permanent residence in Australia.
